Step Up Where You’re At

“You have plenty of courage, I am sure,” answered Oz. “All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty.”
― L. Frank Baum, The Wizard of Oz

Over Thanksgiving, I watched one of my favorite movies of all time-The Wizard of Oz. I love this movie for so many reasons but maybe my favorite is the music and the incredible lines throughout. I thought about how easy it is to feel alone when we step out into new territories such as a new job, a new city, a new position at work or even a new school. It can be easy to sink back and not show up fully with our true selves because of fear of rejection or failure.

As a singer and musician, I know what it’s like to have to  put the daily practice time in even when I don’t feel like it or when I procrastinate because I’m worried if I’ll do it “right” or “good enough”. I am reminded that almost all of life is just showing up exactly where you’re at with exactly what you have. Don’t worry if you don’t know technology as well as someone else; you will learn as you go and find your way. Don’t worry if you’re further behind than someone else; there will always be someone further ahead and further behind you because it’s just the way life is! Don’t worry if you don’t know everything when you start; start learning and figuring it out as you go. I believe if we are brought to an opportunity, we have everything we need to LEARN and DEVELOP to be successful in that place or position. You just need to show up and say, “I’m here. I’m present. I’m willing to put the work in. I may not be perfect but I will give it my best shot.”

Keep taking baby steps in whatever you are doing in life whether it’s music lessons, your job, your schooling or relationships. Take steps to grow and develop in each area you find yourself in and when it gets tough, remember to tell yourself exactly what you’d tell someone else in your shoes. Be kind to yourself, patient, forgiving and have a team of friends and support around you that want to see you succeed and do well! You’ve got this!
